These teens are so inspiring. I felt such a feeling of nostalgia when reading it. In Scotland, my high school introduced mandatory school uniform the year I started (2005) and I even remember one teacher screaming in my face for wearing tailored shorts and not black trousers or a skirt (yes, I did tell her where to go and promptly got called to the headteacher’s office, but still). Expression in the form of fashion was, and still is, so squashed. My mum’s favourite quote to me as a teen when I was getting ready to go anywhere was, “Holly, it’s not a fashion show.” I still to this day disagree with that statement 😌 I admire these teens so much, what a wonderful article.

This is a very odd mentality to me. As someone who has attended schools with uniforms, as well as schools with almost no dress code, I’ve never understood the idea of your school wardrobe being pertinent to the ‘real world’. High school is likely one’s last opportunity to exist in a bubble all its own. Why not take that opportunity to let kids be kids, dress up however they want and just figure it out as they go.

nyc public schools have little to no dress code, most public schools in larger cities have either strict dress code, i.e. certain color polos and khakis only, or they have none at all. also nothing sexual about a child doing anything..period.

Who (aka which crush) will see me wearing it?”
I know I should be more in-line with the ‘dressing for yourself’ yada yada yada thinking, but high school definitely offered this micro environment where the stakes were high and people were dressing to be seen & make statements about themselves – how can I get that as an adult? Where can I find an audience of 30+ peers to show off my capes & too-much accessories to??

Over in America less schools impose school uniforms. Australian school uniforms are a norm here! Of course these teens are going to be more expressive- and trust me when I say, as an Australian teen, that I and many people my age would love to do this! Absolutely loved everything photographed for the article 🙂 not to speak ill against uniforms but self expression would make school farrrrrrr more interesting

Some cool outfits but I’m quite surprised that some of them are allowed in school (Noah, Shandra, Indigo – 15 years old!).

Also, does anyone pick up on sexual vibes with suggestive tongues out and accessories placed in the mouth. These are kids!

I just heard about it / joined and it’s a gold mine of vintage finds. It’s like Instagram and a garage sale had a fashionable baby. So many Gen Z’ers are purchasing their clothing primarily or exclusively from secondhand sources, and they are also building business from selling clothing as well.

These kids are so individually stylish and creative …I love it. So much better than the American Eagle/Hollister/Abercrombie & Fitch clones from my high school days!
