To show gratitude, and empowering depending on the situation. Could be a Cultural thing too that one could pay attention and and change interactions now.

No but you’re on the money! Its so hard to quit cold turkey but I’ve just realised I started at work! When I first heard about this whole sorry/thank you thing, while I immediately saw the value, I felt too far gone to really enact it. So I started saying it at work. Work – a place where I am employed with the universal understanding that I work here, I am in charge here (of people that don’t work here) and all that come into my place of work know this and treat me as such. Its so much easier to start with strangers that have already given you space.

On its surface “a thanker seeks celebration of another” but it also runs into trouble by making assumptions. It implies that the thanker is conferring their approval on another’s actions since they’re in charge, they’re the big dog at the table (since this was your friends get together and their friend who arrived). But this can happen when someone who thanks isn’t really in charge, but just an egotistic control freak who has to have control on every situation. When you say “sorry” you’re not making assumptions about another person’s actions but communicating your own feeling, which is all you can really be sure about. In the end there’s just more than two types of people in the world, sorry or thank you.

when i was a kid (60’s) we’d reply to “sorry” with; “i wasn’t asking for a personal reference”, or “i know that’s what you mama says about you”! get’s them off the “sorry” train quick.
