I never believed in the concept of a “going-out top” until about a month ago. In college, I remember changing no less than 100 dramatic times before going out—my go-to was always a combination of big tees, sweaters, and a blazer, which (shockingly) didn’t feel right on a weekend evening.

Just a few weeks ago, though—during what we may later describe as the all-time peak of NOT going out—something made me a believer: this top on Instagram. I wanted to nudge my 21-year-old self: This is it! This is a going-out top! It has a square-ish neck, dives deep into the armpits, shows some décolleté, and yet is still a knit (ribbed!). Bonus: It’s cozy enough for cold autumn evenings.

If I were going out anywhere, this would be my going-out top. At present, it will be my most fashionable staying-IN top, a phenomenon I am determined to make happen.

Left: Khaite Spring/Summer 2020; Right: Khaite Fall/Winter 2020 via Vogue Runway

Do you remember when Khaite walked this neckline down the runway in both spring and fall 2020 runways shows? If you don’t, I’m here to let you know they did! (Here’s a similar version of it, with an investment-level price tag.) Now, I’ve started noticing this neckline everywhere, and I’d like to suggest this as the starting point for a deep dive into going-out/staying-in tops. One thing I’ll note is that the top I found is “one size fits all,” which I acknowledge does not truly mean one size fits all. Therefore, I’ve provided some great options below in a range of sizes so you can emulate the lewk!

Have you ever tried to wear a cute top with… a pair of sweatpants? If you haven’t, I have good news! It’s an instant mood booster. Wearing a really good top is like putting on mascara: It doesn’t hurt, and it *can* manage to make you feel a bit more pulled together—but it takes a bit of mental work, which is what I’m here to help with. This is the most perfect, most mood-boosting top around. Conveniently, it doubles as a perfect top for fall.

Top: Source Unknown; Sweatpants: Aritzia; Shoes: Nicole Saldaña; Bag: Danse Lente; Sunglasses: Aperçu X Alyssa Coscarelli; Bracelets: Lizzie Fortunato; Necklace: Machete

What will I wear it with? The aforementioned sweatpants, of course. That’s what I thought of immediately when I saw the top, though I also considered wearing it with some wide-leg trousers to my sister’s wedding. Or imagine how great it would be with some skinny pants or leggings, and an oversized denim shirt (unbuttoned, of course)? Perfection.

That’s how I would dress it up (or down). What would you wear with the best staying-in-going-out top of the season? No constraints: Wear it at home or out (socially distanced, please).

I stumble across so many treasures on the internet while finding market for other stories. Here’s where I’ll share them with you, alternating weekly between vintage/second-hand and contemporary finds. Sign up here for our Shopping Newsletter, with eight additional finds every Friday.

I’ve never limited myself to trends—I’m not going to stop wearing a certain style of jeans just because they’re suddenly “out.” However, I do sometimes pay attention to the latest thing: Puffy sleeves gave me great joy (still do) as did clogs (again, still do). Generally, though, I find myself most satisfied by pieces that’ll stand the test of time.

This week, I’m sharing my longtime loves—variations of items I personally own that have given me serious joy. These include but are not limited to: a vintage double-breasted navy blazer, a pair of glass cocktail cups, and a pretty cardigan. Sneak a peek below for eight items I love and think you may, too.

1. The Ingredients for the Perfect Cocktail

My boyfriend Mikey and I occasionally use these glasses for our Friday Happy Hour series on Repeller’s Instagram. They make me feel extremely fancy. When not actually delivering the fruits of Happy Hour to my mouth, they’re out on display, and still providing me with great, Kondo-approved joy. With a serving of Haus’ Peach Passionfruit, let’s sip with one pinky up.

2. Double-Breasted Blazer

One of my favorite possessions is this wool double-breasted blazer I took from my mom. It makes every outfit look more put together. I’ve worn it with sweatsuits, jeans, dresses, leggings… you name it. It’s also great for this time of year, when it’s chilly but not full-on jacket weather. And, hey, guess what? I found some for you, too.

3. Oh, These Sunglasses? They’re Vintage.

I have a pair of sunglasses a lot like these, and they are a reliable compliment-getter. I love the tinted lenses and the square frames—plus, the lack of a logo or branding give them a je ne sais quoi timelessness.

4. A Collarless Jacket

A collarless jacket is another great way to make an otherwise effortless outfit look more put-together. Collarless jackets are fun to style, too, with either a collared shirt or, these days, a hoodie. This one, from Armani Collezioni via Thrilling, is quite a gem.

5. Clogs Keep “Coming Back”

Hermès Spring/Summer 2021 via Vogue Runway

While clogs are pretty hot right now (see the recent Hermès spring/summer 2021 collection), they’re also eternal. My vintage ones are my favorites (and are the most comfortable). Here, I present a variety of styles, from slingbacks to mules, all of which are pretty amazing. I did include this not-vintage J. Crew suede and a a pair of Sixty-Nine cow print ones because I cannot stop thinking about either of them, sorry.

6. Vintage Laura Ashley Cardigan

I’m sad to report that my vintage Laura Ashley sweater is no longer with me (I lost it)—it was one of my favorite vintage possessions. There are a bunch of similar styles on Etsy and eBay for you to peruse, and for me to do some replacement shopping.

7. Oxblood Leather Jacket

This oxblood leather jacket is the one that got away. I don’t actually own one, but I have been regretting not purchasing the one I fell in love with back when I was in college. I love that it’s not black, yet still has the fierceness of a leather jacket. I like it medium-length—to the hips or just past them—and blazer style.

8. And a Sleek Red Trench!

My trench coat has been a fall and spring staple for many, many years now. I own a navy one, but I really, really love the idea of these leather or coated red ones. I guess I inspired myself with the thought of that oxblood jacket?

Anything you own and love that you’d like to recommend? Anything you’re looking for? Lay it on me!

In June, I announced my discovery of the best-ever white button-down. To this day, it’s still my go-to white shirt (even though I actually accidentally washed it with a tie-dye sock and now it’s more pink-ish, but that’s another story). Since then, a lot of people have come to me with specific white-shirt requests: larger collars, no collar, sleeve details, slim-cut. Lo, I have returned to take a deep dive into the wider world of exemplary white shirts.

I’ve personally had the pleasure of getting to feel and see most of the picks below in person, and I am excited to announce that they are all, indeed, fantastic options. It just depends on what style you’re going for!

These are my favorites—now it’s time for you to choose which one is right for you.

1. The Original Favorite

The Japanese Oxford Square Shirt from Everlane has maintained its position as my favorite white shirt. You’re welcome to read my extremely detailed story about it here, but I’ll quickly break it down for you: It’s the perfect weight, so it’s not see-through; it’s structured, not flimsy. It has a boxy cut, which is perfect for leaving untucked or front-tucked (your call). It’s the right shade of white, and it’s very easy to wash, as long as you don’t accidentally throw it in with a tie-dye sock. I’ve convinced many others to get their own, and the feedback has been uniformly positive. I personally went up a size for an oversized look.

2. Oversized Risky Business Shirt

I do not own this shirt from Entireworld, but I sure would like to. I would perhaps style it with boxer shorts and white tube socks à la Tom Cruise, and I’d most definitely wear it with leggings and ballet flats. It’s 100% organic cotton, oversized, soft, and sturdy. Because it’s fairly thick, it’s made to wear unbuttoned, “jacket style,” on days that have just a teeny bit of chill. This is a white shirt story… but I do need to mention that I love the black.

3. The Classic Menswear

My partner first had this Polo Ralph Lauren oxford in denim, and I found myself wearing it multiple times a week (thanks, Mikey!). I decided to get us (lol) the white version—and it turns out that we wear it just as much as the denim one. It’s a men’s style, so size accordingly. I purchased the medium (so we could share it, obviously)—I usually wear it with the sleeves cuffed and boxy or tied in front. Since it’s as easy to wash as a T-shirt, it’ll probably become an everyday staple for you, too.

4. The Perfect Slim-Fit

There are times when you cannot sub an oversized white shirt (though I do love them) in place of a slim-fit one. If you’re wearing a blazer or trousers, a slim fit is a much better option for sleeve layering or tucking. This 100% cotton poplin shirt by Alex Mill is machine washable and stays crisp with a quick steam or iron.

5. Statement Collar

I purchased a large-collared shirt—the one shown above—a couple of years ago and still wear it frequently. It was $35 and vintage from the ’80s. While there are very few contemporary options that are fully white (though I do love this one by Ganni), there are tons of well-priced vintage options. When you dig through the internet, I recommend looking at material: Look for cotton rather than polyester—and ideally the shirt will have cool, old-school details. I love wearing a statement collar shirt under a collarless jacket, with the shirt’s collar folded over.

6. The Sleek No-Collar

There is, of course, the other collar extreme: no collar at all! This cotton one from COS is sleek and modern, with a giant pocket on one side of the chest. I also love the cut: It swings out a bit like the aforementioned Everlane style but is a little dressier, with concealed front buttons. I would most definitely wear this shirt with just the very top button done—and the rest of it loose, flowing out to my sides like a beetle’s wings—over a knit set or jumpsuit.

7. Relaxed Utility

This shirt from Madewell stands out because of three distinct elements: the symmetrical breast pockets that give it a utility-minded flair, the lightweight fabric, and the triple-split back yoke (a very cool detail). I find this shirt easy to layer under sweaters or layered over tees and turtlenecks, making it extremely versatile.

8. The One That Doubles as a Jacket

I’ve had my eyes on this shirt in the cropped version since its launch. It has snap front buttons and could absolutely double as a lightweight jacket. (It also comes in an oversized version.) It’s technically denim, which also means it’s 100% cotton, and therefore qualifies as the thickest white shirt option here (and the one most coveted by moi).

9. The Snazzy Tuxedo Style

I love a tuxedo shirt to specifically wear under a jacket, with a short chain necklace or two. This everyday-casual one is on sale at Lucky Brand for $13.99—or consider this dressier, investment-level option from Wardrobe.NYC. I love the bib detail of a tuxedo shirt—it’s a great way to instantly inject your outfit with a degree of classiness.

10. Cool Construction

Talk about details! This shirt from Angela Brito has a very cool opening at the back that’s cinched with elastic and covered by a flap. Unlike the staple pieces above, this is a statement shirt. It’s also top quality—100% cotton and handmade in Brazil.

Do you have a favorite white shirt I’m missing? Let me know so I can add it to my repertoire!

I stumble across so many treasures on the internet while finding market for other stories. Here’s where I’ll share them with you, alternating weekly between vintage/second-hand and contemporary finds. Sign up here for our Shopping Newsletter, with eight additional finds every Friday.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how my style has become increasingly practical over the last few months. In the past I’ve been notorious for underdressing for the sake of my outfit, but now, as it gets colder, I’m thinking about how to be sensible—layering for the weather and all that—while still having fun with statement-making pieces. Below, you’ll find a mix of major statement pieces (hello there, checkered fleece and bow-tie face mask), plus some smart staples.

1. I Have a Thing for Check

Fleece: Rowing Blazers; Bloomers: Handmade by MRG; Loafers: Belgian shoes

This incredible harlequin fleece from Rowing Blazers just launched this week—I’d probably pair it with a simple base layer (or wear it around the house in bloomers, as I did here). It has pockets and a full-front dual zipper, which is something you don’t always find, but when you do, it’s truly the best feature. I plan on wearing mine season after season, ’til I’m the grandest old dame doing après-ski drinks at Courcheval.

2. Sets are My Fall Dressing Hack

I absolutely LOVE this soft waffle-knit sweater set from Free People. The fact that this knit henley comes with matching pants (they’re actually sold together) is a huge deal, in my book. Sets are my favorite as of late, and these are the perfect base layer for those fun accessories and statement pieces I was talking about—like our good friend, the Rowing Blazers fleece above.

3. On a Note of Practicality

Whenever we’re talking about easy dressing hacks, I always bring up vests. Take this pocketed trench-style one or this military one, both on sale and similar to the vest above, which I wore every day on a trip to London last fall. Vests add another layer and are easy to style. These have extra pockets (Kit Kat storage!), and both would honestly look really cool with the aforementioned fleece and knit set. See what I’m doing here?

4. Circling Back on the Checkered Train

Studio One Eighty Nine makes this black-and-white bucket hat, which I want for fall because it’s not heavy but still shades your eyes from the sun. Instead of a plain old canvas hat, this one is attention-getting yet still very practical. (If not black and white, perhaps consider this dyed yellow one?)

5. Or Try This Patchwork Hat

Friends Fornever makes incredible, one-of-a-kind pieces, including our second! take! on the bucket hat this week! (I’ve had it favorited for quite some time.) This just recently came back in stock, too—it’s an easy way to add a little pizzazz.

6. Statement Face Masks

I’m still thinking about the bow-tied face masks from Collina Strada. They might be the ultimate in mask statements, as shown by the couple above. Speaking of masks: For another take, I really love this mask by Abacaxi, specifically in aqua. It’s lined and I can confirm that it’s super soft, so I imagine it’ll be great as it gets colder.

7. Not Your Average Rain Shoe

I stumbled upon these loafers by Hunter a couple of years ago, while assisting market on a rainwear editorial. While standard loafers usually let precipitation slip through their stitching (and ruin the leather), these rubber loafers won’t—they’re the perfect solution for a rainy season. You should know…this is not my first time recommending them.

8. Cow Print for When It’s Not Raining

And for when it’s dry out… these coooooool cow-print boots! When the rest of your outfit falls a bit flat (see: black sweater and leggings), these shoes are a statement—but still practical for the season.

Have you found anything new and noteworthy this week you’d like to share with the class? I’d love to know!

Every summer I miss the hug of knitwear: I long for the sweet embrace of a good sweater wrapping its softness around me. The feeling of walking outside when there is just a little chill in the air with the perfect cardigan on is a profound delight.

As we edge into fall, I’ve begun to unpack my sweaters, pulling them out from the depths of the drawer under my bed (and in some other nooks and crannies in my apartment, if I’m being honest). I gravitate toward specific styles for their comfort, ease, and style: Cardigans are great for zero-effort layering; cable knits are classic and easy to style; collared sweaters look instantly put-together; and ribbed sweaters feel so good on your skin.

Here, my favorite styles, with specific options for each because it’s fall and we all need a soft, knitted hug.

1. The Chunky Cotton Cardigan

Sweater: Alex Mill; Necklace: Gimaguas; Earrings: Lizzie Fortunato; Scarf in hair: Si Silks

This slightly oversized sweater can double as a jacket in the early fall because of its thickness and insulation (it’s 100% cotton)—thanks to its fit, it’s easy to layer sweaters or tees underneath. Bonus: I love a crewneck cardigan, because they look great with a collared shirt beneath them. Alex Mill offers this style year after year, making it a classic worth investing in.

2. The Recycled Cashmere Henley

Madewell launched its Recycled Cashmere collection today, featuring 13 knitwear pieces made from 70% globally sourced certified recycled cashmere. I specifically plan to pair this knit henley in mossy green or bright lavender with the coordinating knit trousers, layered under a blazer or jacket (brownie points if the blazer or jacket is an equally great color).

3. A Tie-Front that Doubles as a Shirt

Sweater: Madewell; Necklace: Tuleste — similar here

This tie-front cardigan is a great option for both everyday and for dressing up—I’ll be grabbing one of these myself, unless it sells out (again). I like it worn with nothing underneath, as a warmer option than a T-shirt.

4. The Luxurious Statement Cardigan

I’ve referenced the brand Maxhosa Africa several times recently, mainly for its incredible knitwear patterns and timeless prints (don’t sleep on the socks, either!). Their cardigan collection—with options for both men and women—is extensive; go for a women’s cardigan for a snugger fit or to the men’s section for an oversized, baggy look.

5. The Checkerboard

Sweater: Kule; Heart Pendant Necklace: NOTTE Jewelry; Beaded Necklace: NOTTE Jewelry

I first saw this sweater at a press preview at Kule’s showroom—Kule’s founder and designer, Nikki, brought it out immediately, knowing I would adore it. I love checker and I love red, so naturally this sweater is extremely enticing to me. It’s a lightweight cotton blend, meaning it’s very comfortable (kind of like a sweater/sweatshirt hybrid) and easy to wear, layered or not. Some other checkered sweaters: this hand-knit one for under $100 and this black and red one from the ’90s for $38, both on Etsy.

6. The Lightweight Silk/Cashmere Blend Crewneck

Sweater: NAADAM; Collar: Vintage; Pearl Necklace: Wolf Circus; Dolphin Pendant Necklace: NOTTE Jewelry

NAADAM is beloved for its knitwear—like their infamous $75 cashmere sweater. I also love their oversized cashmere crewneck for colder days (or when the heat hasn’t yet kicked in). Add to the list its new, lightweight crewneck with a pocket, which I styled here with a detachable collar. It’s a perfect layering sweater, and because it’s NAADAM, you know you’ll have it for years.

7. The Waffle Turtleneck

This 100%-cotton sweater by Selva Negra is L.A-made., machine washable, and the perfect oversized shape. Look at that waffle texture! And that bright turmeric (or, fall foliage, or, autumnal root vegetable) color! It’s the kind of sweater you’d wear to a multi-course candlelit dinner at home with a pair of stretchy pants and your hair up in a voluminous scrunchie. Wow, I just wrote weeknight pasta-dinner erotic fanfic. This sweater is truly inspirational.

8. Vintage Fisherman

Sweater: Vintage; Crochet Bandana: Fancy Nancy; Earring: Timeless Pearly

The fisherman style is my favorite classic sweater, and I pull out mine anytime I want to be warm but with an easy-classic look. It’s chunky but not too bulky—and another perfect option for layering things underneath it. The one I own is pretty soft, but I recommend adding a T-shirt or turtleneck underneath it, to reduce any scratchiness. I like mine oversized, and I wear it with a pair of leggings or skinny trousers + loafers for an easy fall ensemble, no jacket required. Check to see where the sweater is from, too. if it’s from Scotland or Ireland, you are wearing legitimate heritage on your body (that being said, this vintage RL one with the pockets is pretty cool).

9. The Sweater Vest

For the feeling of a hug but without the full kaboodle, I love a sweater vest. Two options: Wear it like a crew neck (with either a tight tee or nothing underneath), or with a collared shirt or tee. Both of the below are from Ganni, but you can find a slew of vintage options on Etsy or eBay at very low prices.

10. The Alpaca Polo

Sweater: Eleven Six; Chain Necklace: Machete; Yin Yang Pendant Necklace: NOTTE Jewelry; Yin Yang Earring: NOTTE Jewelry

I included the brand Eleven Six in our Labor Day/Early-Fall sales story—their sweaters are great to prep for fall with. Now that we’re here, I come to you again with this brand of luxury sweaters sustainably-made in Peru. They’re incredibly soft—the exact sartorial hug you want—with original cuts and shapes. I specifically love the Tatum sweater for its polo collar, ribbing, and shape.

11. The ’70s-Style Polo Sweater

Sweater: Tory Sport; Chain Necklace: Vintage; Locket Necklace: Missoma

This fitted sweater by Tory Sport reminds me of one my mom had in high school. It’s slightly form-fitted, bright and cheery with an air of preppiness to it. I imagine it paired with a mini-skirt or wide-leg trousers—something with some volume to it. It’s 100% merino wool, but trust me, very soft. I found some similar vintage options actually from the ’70s for you, too.

12. The Cool Deconstructed Statement

I recommend Andersson Bell for its original cuts and designs. The knitwear styles are art pieces: two-toned, cutout, deconstructed, multi-material. I love the color differentiation between the arms of this “Mollyna” style, and the detachable sleeves of this one. I recommend these if you want to hit a recently re-opened modern art museum looking like a part of an exhibition. This is a very good strategy for keeping other museum visitors six feet away from you at a safe, look-but-don’t-touch, distance.

What do you look for in a sweater? Do you have a favorite? Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll do some internet weaving for you.

I stumble across so many treasures on the internet while finding market for other stories. Here’s where I’ll share them with you, alternating weekly between vintage/second-hand and contemporary finds. Sign up here for our Shopping Newsletter, with eight additional finds every Friday.

I just wrote a story about loafers (not sure if you saw it, but here it is), in which I suggested classic horsebit vintage Gucci loafers. The same day the story was published, I saw a friend wearing a pair, and I thought it was a sign. Maybe not? But I like to think it was. So I found some more, all for you. .

And not just loafers, my friends! Witness: cool fringed jackets and jeans, gold chain necklaces, a pair of cool earrings, ceramic plates, a very awesome red cardigan, and some reworked denim. Scroll on below and shop with me, if you please.

1. I Have a Loafers Obsession

The day I wrote this story on loafers, I ran into a friend, and the first thing I noticed (other than her smile) was her vintage Gucci loafers. I felt so validated. They were perfect: suede, square-toed, a little bit chunky. I forgot to take a photo, so had her text one to me. The creative direction was all hers! I will say it forever: Loafers are the best fall footwear.

2. Some Fringed Jackets

I was searching for fringed jackets for a story and subsequently fell into a deep, deep hole. From leather to suede to this rainbow vision, a cool, fringed jacket is a superior addition to my fall wardrobe—I’ll soon swap an old windbreaker of my dad’s for one.

3. And a Pair of Fringed Jeans

These upcycled jeans are available in sizes 0-20. Message the seller—Sustainable Maria, whose shop I frequently browse—to chat about length and fit. I love the idea of wearing these with tall boots, so the fringe hangs over the shaft of the boots. Ah! Fall dressing rules.

4. Gold Necklaces Forever!

Remember this gold necklace story? I stand by the fact that a gold chain does wonders for basically any outfit. Since publication, I’ve found a few more worth checking out—especially if you’re looking for something to pair with the T-shirt you wore to bed (see: my daily video call uniform). Check out this two-toned one—you could wear it long, or wrap it around twice!

5. A Jacket and a Vest

If you haven’t yet encountered the beauty of Moore Vintage, block off some time in your cal. I’m specifically eyeing this wool military jacket with bold buttons and this Gaultier denim vest. There are just so many treasures. You be the judge!

6. Ceramic Dinnerware

My boyfriend Mikey and I recently stumbled upon a new shop in our neighborhood with soooo many colorful ceramic pieces. I’m not able to drop that cash right now, but I’d love a cool ceramic mug or two for morning coffee. Maybe they’d make you happy too, so take a browse of one or two (rhyme!).

7. This Loop Knit Cardigan

I had a poodle-esque sweater years ago that I irresponsibly lost, and I still think about it sometimes. I love this shaggy red cardigan from Hot Cocoa Vintage that you can wear buttoned up, open, OR over your shoulders, like a voluminous shawl. I’m a fan of texture, and this sweater’s got it.

8. Reworked Denim

I keep adding reworked denim to these Treasure Hunts because I am really, really in love with the idea of a patchwork pair of jeans + shrunken cardigan + boots for fall. Amalie got a pair of these and wore them in a recent story, which I think just confirms my idea of how some reworked denim can really transform an outfit.

I don’t love warm-weather footwear, and just spent six months straight wearing sneakers: They’re the only shoes with coverage (I don’t like my toes) that don’t cause swampy soles. With the temperatures now in the 60s (and dropping), I have unleashed my fall shoe staple: loafers.

In general. loafers are my favorite shoe. They’re comfortable, versatile, and available in a vast range of styles. I find loafers to be interchangeable with sneakers—which is a relief, because I am very ready for a switch after so many months of my lace-ups.

Below, I’ve broken down my favorite loafers, by style and standout elements.

The Classic

Loafers: G.H. Bass Weejuns, Socks: Comme Si

I have yet to find a classic loafer I love as much as G.H. Bass’ Weejuns. I have had several of their classic pairs (including this really cool two-toned pair I wear often) but last year, I acquired their Winter Weejuns style, which has a rubber sole. The rubber sole solves loafers’ main problems: slippability on the subway, instant ruin in the rain, and general stiffness. The Winter Weejun is as comfortable as a sneaker—and if this rave review hasn’t convinced you, call me.

The “What Are Those?!”

I love the brand Zou Xou (specifically, I love their Mary Jane flats, but this story is about loafers). It’s a sustainable, female, and Black-owned brand, founded in 2015, with shoes all handmade in Argentina. While the Pilar loafer has a classic body, the hand-cut leather link detail makes them a statement. Officially, they’re a loafer, but they’re also the kind of shoe that would make you take a double take. Hence the categorization: What are those?!

I Found the Platform Loafers

Loafers: Vagabond Shoemakers; Socks: Peach

I assume you’ve seen these on Instagram before but maybe didn’t realize what they were: They’re the kind of loafer that makes an outfit look cool. I just recently became the proud owner of a pair of Vagabond platform loafers, and I can confirm they make you feel cool, too. Bonus: They’re also very walkable, with a chunky but sturdy rubber sole (no slipping!).

Chunky Rubber Sole

Loafers: CAMPERLAB; Socks: Comme Si

Talk about chunky! These loafers from CAMPERLAB appear in my saved tab on Instagram countless times. I’ve featured them on the site before, and I will certainly continue to do so. I personally love the rustic mustard colorway, but they also come in a deep red and a classic black. Camper shoes are generally extremely comfortable and these are no exception, with their OrthoLite® cushioned footbed and sweat-proof, part-cotton lining: features I copied and pasted directly from the product description.

Workwear Tassel

I love this style for workwear: a flat loafer with a tassel. Boden’s shoes go up to size 12, and therefore are great for most feet. This style also features a “flexible sole,” which won’t make your feet ache during an 8+ hour workday. I enjoy the combination of materials on this loafer, and there’s a snazzy leopard-print option if you’re classic but fun.

The Downtown Tassel

Loafers: Dr. Martens; Socks: Cotton Citizen

This pair also features a tassel—but with their classic, Dr. Marten’s thick rubber sole, they’re a casual, everyday alternative to the brand’s beloved oxford. I love these with a pantsuit (think: cropped wide trousers + oversized blazer). The bonus is that they’re Dr. Martens! If you own a pair, you already know that after a few wears, they form to your feet and become an extension of your foot.

Forget Your Solids

I love Brother Vellies’ loafers (especially the python ones) because of the ethics involved: The female-and Black-owned brand partners with independent artisans to craft their products. I also appreciate the fact that these are not solid black. I love both the Troubadour style with the metal buckle and the Library style, which has a classic silhouette (and this one is on sale!).

The Buckled

No standard penny loafer here—the Scuola loafer by M.Gemi has a chunky buckle and square toe. It’s perhaps more of a hybrid between a monk strap and a brogue if we’re being technical, but I’m keeping it here because it satisfies all my dress loafer desires, with a smart look and crisp finish. This style comes in three colors but my favorite—especially for fall—is definitely the glossy brown.

A Pop of Color

Sebago makes loafers with a classic body much like G.H. Bass. I’m drawn to the yellow leather for fall, to add a little brightness if you feel like your colors are landing a bit neutral. Both styles fit true to size in my experience, and with a little ankle sock, take no time to break in.

The Heeled-but-Walkable

I found Wal & Pai—a sustainable brand based in Los Angeles—two years ago, and to my delight, discovered their incredible comfort while bravely walking the Williamsburg Bridge in their footwear. The Bass has a bouncy rubber heel that puts a literal spring in your step but is supportive enough for long walks (see: Williamsburg Bridge). I also love that there is a heel, especially for those trousers you haven’t yet had hemmed. Special mention to these similar two-toned ones, which are on sale! I love their velvet-and-patent combo, and that’s a great discount, huh?.

The Two-Toned

Speaking of two-toned, these Mara Bini loafers are so incredibly chic they almost look like they’re from another, more elegant era. They’re also made in Italy, which is chic, too. I particularly love the two leather styles with horsebit buckles: the Gioia style (with a snake top) and this solid leather style (with contrast piping). The brand has several other styles and color combinations to choose from, too, many of which are on sale.

The Icon

If you like a horsebit buckle, consider the original horsebit style with a pair of vintage iconic Gucci loafers, a style that originated in 1953. Che classico! I personally like the ones with the stitched rounded-square toe in patent, soft leather, or suede, but I also found these rare logo ones available on the Black-owned vintage shop Thrilling! (eBay also has quite the assortment.) Buying them vintage will cost you a fraction of the full price, and because it’s such an old style, I highly recommend going that route.

The Secret Slipper

This smart pair from Jack Erwin is noteworthy because the back heel can flap down to make it a slide (very wonderful for quick errands or urgent dog walks). What I love most about them, though, is their visible hand stitching and square toe. Their soft leather sole actually makes them feel a bit like a moccasin, making them secretly very, very comfortable. I wear them interchangeably with ballet flats because they are so lightweight and easy. And just to make it clear, I do not follow the No-White-After-Labor-Day rule.

Do you have favorite ones I’m missing? Walkable? Comfortable? Statement? Let’s chat loafers in the comments!

Pants. Gotta love them. Sometimes they’re insanely uncomfortable—sometimes they feel like a hug. Either way, we should probably wear them at some point. Fall is around the corner, creeping up into our lives whether we like it or not. (I like it, but in no way am I ready to deal with the season that comes after autumn.)

The good thing about pants, however, is that they’re great for both fall and the season that shall not be named. Now that I’m done convincing you on the idea of pants, which everyone already owns anyway, I’m here to convince you that printed pants are your staple piece for the next two seasons. Jackets are cute, but they can also ruin your outfit. If you still want to show that you’re remotely cool underneath all that jacket material, I suggest… printed pants. Pants. Printed. Printed pants. It’s actually sort of miraculous: They’ll let you show off your cool self, while keeping you warm, this season and the next.

Below, a few outfits that may lead you to purchasing printed pants in the next minute/few seconds.

Logo-Printed Pantalones

This outfit would be perfect with a leather jacket and/or large sweater for this fall. The text makes you look twice, and the sneakers matching the logo pulls the whole outfit together.

Pattern Smashing

Take a moment. Breathe it all in. This outfit is everything. The way she mixes patterns with the stripes and the zebra-print pants is on point—not to mention how the scrunchie, sunnies, and shoes move your eyes around the entire outfit. This pattern-smashing ensemble is achieved by connecting colors. I suggest you try it out!

Bleached

I love this outfit for what the pants and top are doing for each other. They complement each other perfectly. The top feels vintage, while pants feel fresh. Bonus: It all looks extremely comfy.

The BW Printed Set

I’ve spent a lot of time drooling over this outfit. If I saw it on her in person, I would consider stealing it. The set is almost checkered, the pattern that took over for gingham this fall. The top feels like Patagonia met street style, thanks to OBEY. Even though this outfit is a set, if you take away the top and add a different colored puffy coat with some colorful sneakers, you have yourself another look.

The Classic

These pants have been a staple for many in the past. They’re easy to pair with anything and always look good. With this outfit in particular, I love how she is wearing hiking boots and a rain hat in a different print from the pants (would also be cute if matched!). The jacket compliments the entire outfit, making it feel like she’s going on a chic hike.

Floral

This set!? The boots!? These Ganni leggings are basically pants, in that they cover your legs. Same thing. I love all the warm colors in this blurry floral print. I need this outfit for fall STAT.

Gingham

Didn’t I just say gingham was over? MAYBE. Am I already regretting what I said? Yes. First of all, that banana looks tasty. Second of all, this different-colored gingham set is working!! The brown colors pull in warmth for fall, while the punchy pink in the pants gives the whole thing some energy.

In summation: This fall, I suggest you embrace your truest self and step out of your home to catch some fresh air in something that makes you feel good. The grocery store needs to see your fit! So do your neighbors. Do it for the Vine!! Just kidding, but in your new print pants, you will feel the confidence that Jason Derulo (being insanely excessive for absolutely no reason) has in this TikTok.

Feature Photo: SIEDRÉS printed knit pants, Holiday The Label checkered pants and Juliet Johnstone hand-painted pants.

I stumble across so many treasures on the internet while finding market for other stories. Here’s where I’ll share them with you, alternating weekly between vintage/second-hand and contemporary finds. Sign up here for our Shopping Newsletter, with eight additional finds every Friday.

Last weekend I went over to Greenpoint Terminal, this new open air vintage and artisans market right next to Skyline Drive, the new drive-in movie theater. I saw so many items that got me excited for the upcoming cooler months—including a black leather jacket that sparked many DMs (see it below).

Below, you’ll find eight different pieces, exclusively vintage, to help us get inspired for fall.

1.

This is the jacket! I thought it was so cool, hanging there with its sleek black leather and white trim. I was tempted to put it on right there and then change into a pair of loose-fitting jeans + henley and mules. After having major regrets for not snagging it for myself, I went on the hunt for some others, all of which I fancy (including the pants version of the jacket):

2.

Speaking of jackets! I recently saw this jacket on line at Whole Foods (a great place to people-watch) and I was drawn to its cool shape and that little slit in the back. Plus, a hooded jacket is a great outerwear choice in the fall when it always seems to be just about to rain.

3.

I saw this asymmetrical blazer on The Marcon Court Project’s Instagram—it was sold, but she occasionally drops some new ones on her Depop. I am now hooked on the idea of acquiring my own. I wonder what she does with the other two halves…

4.

Here are my mom and dad in the ’80s. My focus here is not on which traits I inherited from each of them (though I do think about that a lot), but rather my mother’s oversized lace collar. I am a fan of detachable collars, and when I say they truly transform a crewneck top, I am very, very serious. What would my mom’s outfit have been without one?

5.

I was looking through my phone this week (to get some inspiration for this story) when I remembered I saved this photo from the Prada Men’s Fall 2017 show because I have an IMMENSE love for colorful graphic wool sweaters (coogi, argyle, or Fair Isle is great) with solid tan trousers right now. The outfit in my head was missing something: a massive, colorful belt.

6.

I met up with my friend Jo the other day (socially distanced, with masks) and had instant footwear envy. These boots by Simon MIller are so incredible—I just love the block heel and the height. I found some similar vintage styles for all of us to consider:

7.

This is a photo from NYFW in February, back when shows weren’t virtual (though honestly, I am really enjoying the new accessibility). This vintage patchwork jacket was one of the first things I grabbed from the depths of my hall closet when the temperature started to drop this week. It’s pretty lightweight, and roomy enough that it’s very easy to layer over other clothes (chunky sweaters, blazers, pajamas…). In my mind, a patchwork jacket is timeless, and if you can find one for under $100, like these below, even better.

8.

I do styling appointments with people over video calls, and post-appointment, I’ll send them an info packet with links to items I think they should check out. A client of mine was on the hunt for a black wrap mini-skirt. Now I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of styling a vintage one (like this highly discounted Saint Laurent one) + patterned or hand-dyed tights + cardigan + loafers.

Are you inspired by anything you’ve seen in the past week? Let me know in the comments below!

Before I started working at Man Repeller, I was creative director of Outdoor Voices, which felt, at least at first, a little ironic. I’d always been the least sporty kid in school, the one who always had a letter from her mum to get out of P.E.—yet there I was, suddenly thinking about sports 24/7. There was team yoga, team basketball, team jogs. We conducted walking meetings outside and met with collaborators and partners on hikes and bike rides. During my time there, the lines that usually separate exercise, work, and social time blurred completely. As a result, I spent a lot of time wearing leggings—and have since become a bit of an authority on the subject. So here I am, ready to share it with you, along with a few other people who’ve pulled on their fair share of spandex.

Below: Tiffany, third from the right—An early leggings aficionado at sports day.

Outdoor Voices: Best for Getting Sweaty

Requisite “Okay, maybe I’m biased, but…” — I still wear OV’s TechSweat Legging in the summer or for any high-sweat activity like running, boot camp, or spinning. The fabric is really light and has a cool, silky feeling. Bonus: The structured waistband is super flattering and stops them from falling down while you’re moving.

The Lululemon Align: Best for Yoga

The soft, cozy fabric and a simple, flexible waistband make these leggings great for colder weather and in-studio activities like yoga and Pilates. They come in a range of waistband heights and inseam lengths, which means all folks of all heights can avoid camel toe or the baggy-ankles look of too-long leggings.

The Everlane Perform: Best Fashion Legging

A smooth, flattering fit, in a nice range of colors. They’re not specifically suited to one activity or the other, but they’re a nice, simple compliment to everything else in your wardrobe.

Girlfriend Collective: Best Recycled Legging

Made from 25 recycled water bottles, Girlfriend Collective leggings get bonus points for an extended size range (XXS-6XL) and three different inseam lengths.

Blanqi: Best Maternity Leggings

At the beginning of my pregnancy, my Lulu Align pants had enough stretch to fit, but as I’ve gotten bigger, some bump-specific support has been extremely welcome. I’ve recently been wearing these Blanqi over-the-bump leggings. They also make a high-waisted, postpartum legging with a slightly compressive waistband that I’m going to try once the baby arrives. If you’re in the market for maternity leggings, it’s worth noting that Girlfriend Collective and Nike both recently launched maternity lines, too.

Gil Rodrigez: Best Cotton Legging

Founded by former American Apparel designer Eliana Gil Rodriguez, these ethically-made-in-the-USA leggings are 90% cotton, 10% spandex. Perfect if synthetic fabrics aren’t your jam. I’m pairing mine with the El Tigre Chiquito crop top.

PRU Apparel: Best Printed Legging

PRU stands for “Power + Representation + Unity” and the brand’s mission of sisterhood and community can’t be beat. Neither can their sweat-wicking, squat-proof, leggings in vibrant prints, perfect those looking to stand out.

Wish List

I’ve got my eye on this seamless set by Roam Loud, founded by Toyin Omisore—one of many BIPOC brands our market editor, Eliz, turned me onto. Others to consider include Ju’Nae, Glamourina, and Pretty Girl Athletics.

Honorable Mentions

Live the Process’s knit-rib leggings can be paired with a matching cardigan to make a chic set that would look as good with mules as it does with sneakers. And if pockets are your thing, Bandier’s got you covered. While you’re there, pause to consider their tie-waisted legging, inspired by lace-front football uniforms.

Leggings Made for Hiking in Style

Picked by: Evelynn Escobar-Thomas

Outdoor Voices TechSweat 7/8 Zoom Legging

Evelynn is a Los Angeles-based creative activist and founder of an intersectional womxn’s hiking group, Hike Clerb. She’s a champion of representation and equity for Black and brown womxn from the great outdoors to digital media and beyond.

My favorite leggings are Outdoor Voices’ TechSweat 7/8 Zoom leggings. They keep everything in place, are super breathable, and come in super-cute colors!

Runner-up: My runner-up would definitely have to be any Nike leggings. They fit like a glove!

Natural-Fiber Leggings Designed for Cozy Sundays

Picked by: Eva Alt

Eva is an independent dancer and social media/content consultant based in NYC. She’s currently choreographing and producing her first performance piece.

I’m in love with my friend’s recently launched brand, Ceres. It’s sportswear made from all-natural fibers and produced in LA. The warm-up legging is my favorite—it’s in this cozy, yummy waffle-knit I’ll be wearing every day this fall. I’m trying to be a more conscious consumer and a lot of activewear isn’t made very sustainably. Ceres’ ethos really speaks to me, and the styles and feel of the clothes are unique and beautiful.

Runner-up: Capezio. Simple and classic.

Sweat-Resistant Leggings (With Pockets!) for Marathon Stars

Picked by: Thị Minh Huyền Nguyễn

Nike Epic Luxe Running Legging

Born in Germany, Thị Minh Huyền Nguyễn is a Vietnamese writer, multi-disciplinary creative, marathon runner, and activist. After having lived in NYC for five years, she’s currently empowering Black, brown, and queer communities in Berlin.

Nike Luxe Running tights have been my go-to for every chilly fall and winter run. They’re super comfortable and sweat-resistant, and they have a compression feel while also allowing air circulation with the mesh on the calves. As a marathon runner who likes to run-commute or go grocery shopping right after my workout, the two large pockets (one with zip in the back) outside and one inside are my favorite since I can carry my keys, credit cards, and phone with me.

Runner-up: For running, I like to stick to Nike tights. For yoga or pilates, I like Outdoor Voices leggings, since on the mat, I don’t need the pockets or zippers. Those are incredibly comfortable as well and shape a nice butt, too 😉

Gimme Those “Leggings That Hold Everything in Place”

Picked by: Minami Gessel

Outdoor Voices TechSweat 7/8 Legging

Minami is a 22-year-old model who has been quarantining in Los Angeles.

I love love love the Outdoor Voices TechSweat Legging! They’re super comfy,  and they have a compression band so they really snatch your waist! I love to wear them to work out or to run errands. I don’t like leggings that are see-through or snag easily. I have a big ass, so when I’m looking for leggings, I make sure they don’t show my undies when I bend down.

Runner-up: Nike high-waisted leggings. I gravitate toward leggings that hold everything in place.

The Form-Fitting Leggings of Choice for a Pro Ballerina

Picked by: Nardia Boodoo

Nardia is a professional ballerina with The Washington Ballet—as well as a college student and Pilates enthusiast.

Tory Sport—they’re typically high-waisted, breathable, and form-fitting, plus they have a pocket for my phone or keys. They also don’t show sweat. I really dislike sheer leggings. I love a solid color or fun, classic pattern.

Runner-up: Beyond Yoga.

‘Mindfully Made’ (and Female-Owned) Danish Leggings

Picked by: Bianca Valle

Bianca is a certified holistic nutritionist and artist living in New York.

The sustainably made leggings from Planet Nusa, a female-owned Danish brand. I adore the girls who run it and their mission of inclusivity. My pet peeve is when leggings aren’t true to size. These are.

Runner-up: My second choice is Girlfriend because they’re also mindfully made.
